Torticollis is a common condition found in infants within the first few months of life. An infant with torticollis presents with tightness in the neck muscle, which causes the child to tilt his head and rotate to the other side. The child will often favor keeping their head in one position and is restricted from turning to the opposite side. Torticollis often develops when the baby is in utero — many times it develops from the baby being in the same position in utero. It often leads to the infant developing an asymmetrical shaped (flat) head. It can be either one side of the head or the entire backside of the head. These children often have difficult times with tummy time because their neck muscles are too weak to support the head.
